Search narrows for land for new Franklin school

FRANKLIN — Williamson County school officials say they are narrowing in on land for a new elementary school in the Trinity community, but it's not a done deal.
The land, which is off Clovercroft Road near Tulloss Road, is being scrutinized to determine whether it is suitable for a new elementary school that is scheduled for completion in August 2011.

Director of Facilities and Construction Kevin Fortney told school board members Thursday during a work session that the 26 acres, labeled as the Conway property on maps, still presents some overarching issues, namely with traffic and sewer lines.

The land is considered outside urban growth boundaries, and sewer lines do not connect to the land. They would have to construct a treatment facility on the site, and that would require more acreage, Fortney said. This project alone could cost about $500,000.

The location of the land also would likely require the district to undergo some roadway improvements for traffic flow, Fortney said.

These items and others, such as the cost of grading the land to make it flat for ball fields and increasing the water line to the site, has school officials continuing to examine the site closely. They want to be sure the needed site work would fit into the $12 million budget for the school.

Moreover, they haven't ruled out other sites, he said. They have looked at four other sites in the general vicinity, Fortney said.

Director of Schools Mike Looney told board members the district has to have the property purchased by April to stay on track with completion dates.

Meanwhile, Fortney recommended the school board move toward approving architectural designs of the school. If approved, the new school would look a lot like Pearre Creek and Allendale elementary schools, two schools under construction and due to be completed in August.

Johnson & Bailey Architects P.C. designed the plans. The cost of the plans for the Trinity area elementary would be about $296,000.
