Demonbreun Street development proposal gets support

The backers of a $100 million mixed-use project on the Music Row roundabout are organizing area business owners in a letter-writing campaign to support their proposal.

Houston-based Lionstone Group has gathered 10 local businesses to support its
effort to build an upscale commercial and retail complex on Demonbreun Street, a spokesman for the developer said Tuesday.

"A project like that (Lionstone's) would be amazing," said Jason Sheer, one of the letter writers and the owner of The Tin Roof music club and restaurant.

"I know what a building like that will do."

The campaign urges city officials to throw their weight behind Lionstone's proposal to build a pair of buildings with a hotel, condos, offices and stores.

That project has been mired down by opposition from a single landowner, music company owner Joy Ford, who has refused several offers to sell, including a $900,000 deal extended earlier this year.

She says she does not want to sell at any price.

The letters are addressed to Councilwoman Erica Gilmore and come a month after the Metro Development and Housing Agency began legal proceedings to seize Ford's property through the power of eminent domain.

Gilmore could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
