Regis Corp. will close 160 salons in fiscal 2009

Minneapolis-based Regis Corp. said Monday that it plans to close 160 under-performing salons in fiscal year 2009, with the majority located inside the nation's malls.

It isn't clear if any of the chain's salons in the Nashville area will close.

There are five salons operating under the name Trade Secret in the Nashville area, including stores at CoolSprings Galleria and the Mall at Green Hills, according to the company's Web site.

Regis said of the pending closings that 100 would be in malls, 40 at strip-shopping center locations and the rest in the United Kingdom.

About one-third of the closings will be the company's salon Trade Secret brand, which targets women interested in trying the latest beauty products, said Alex Forliti, director of investor relations.

Forliti said the company probably will close mall locations that have lost a large tenant or otherwise faced difficulties attracting customers. The company said it would offer jobs to employees affected by the closings at nearby Regis-owned salons.

Regis operates several other concepts, including Supercuts and Regis Salons.
