AT&T is expected to lay off at least 22 union employees in Middle Tennessee by this spring as part of plans to cut 12,000 jobs nationwide, a union official said Monday.
Rick Feinstein, president of Local 3808, an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America, said he expects more job cuts later. Dallas-based AT&T announced the cuts earlier this month.
Cathy Lewandowski, AT&T's local spokeswoman, wouldn't discuss the extent of job cuts in the area. She said managers and other nonunion em-ployees would be affected.
"This won't affect our ability to provide the quality customer service that our customers have known and come to expect," she said.
Jeff Kagan, a telecommunications analyst, said layoffs have more to do with changes in the telecommunications industry and a series of mergers and acquisitions than the current economy.
"This is what happens when companies merge," Kagan said.
