Developments earn TN 'State of the Year' title

Tennessee was named the 2009 State of the Year by Business Facilities magazine, a national trade publication that covers economic development issues.
Hemlock Semiconductor Corp.'s plans to build a $1.2 billion energy-related facility in Clarksville, Tenn., was picked as the magazine's 2009 Silver Award winner among the top job-creating projects in the nation.

Hemlock's facility is expected to open in 2012, creating at least 500 jobs, company and state officials have said.

Business Facilities' Editor in Chief Jack Rogers said Tennessee set a "proactive example of successful development that should serve as a model for all states charting their path to recovery."

In 2009, Tennessee reported $3.1 billion in new capital investments, according to state data. Still, the state unemployment rate continued to register in the double digits at 10.3 percent in November.

Site Selection magazine also recently named Tennessee among the top five states that have fostered a superior business climate.
