Nashville Business Briefs: Luxury condos will be auctioned

The West End Luxury Condominiums in Nashville, a $60 million, 72-unit luxury condo project on West End Avenue that has sold just five units since sales started in the spring of 2008, is planning to auction up to 45 units on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The auction will occur two weeks after another luxury condo complex downtown, the Terrazzo, puts 30 units up for bid.

"We would just like to get momentum going and establish a market,'' said John Coleman Hayes, the developer and builder.

The West End has no studio-size units. Its smallest unit is more than 1,000 square feet. None of its units have sold for less than $560,000.

The average size of units at the auction will be 2,100 square feet, plus an average outdoor patio size of 225 square feet. Hayes said he will keep no minimum bid or reserve price on the units but may stop the bidding at any time.

Belmont's MBA program lauded

Business Week magazine has released its annual ranking of top part-time MBA programs, and Belmont University's program finished No. 18 in the U.S. and third in the South.

Worcester Polytechnic in Worcester, Mass., finished No. 1 in the nation. Elon and Emory universities were the only Southern business schools with higher-ranked part-time MBAs.

The rankings were based on several measurements: a student survey; an academic quality score based on GMAT scores, work experience, tenured faculty, average class size in core business classes, the number of business electives available to part-time MBA students, and each program's completion rate; and how many survey respondents said their program was "completely" responsible for them achieving specific goals.

New kiosk helps find airport jobs

An employment center kiosk has been set up in the Nashville International Airport's baggage claims area for job hunters seeking work at the airport authority.

The self-service kiosk opened on Thursday, airport spokeswoman Emily Richard said. The computer also has basic contact information for human resources departments at various food concessionaires and airport vendors as well as the airlines.

The airport added the kiosk because "we've just seen an increase in inquiries," Richard said. Airport job listings are also available online at www.flynashville.com.

Melrose center draws $3.8M bid

The old Melrose shopping center off Franklin Pike drew a $3.8 million highest bid at auction on Thursday. Negotiations will continue with the unidentified bidder, said principal auctioneer E. Dwight O'Neal.

Plans for a 220,000-square-foot, mixed-used development on the property that houses Melrose Billiards among other tenants were put on hold last year and then scrapped. Entrepreneur Charlie Carroll is the controlling partner in the group that owns the building.
