Memphis riverfront plan generates heated debate

MEMPHIS — The way Guy Weaver sees it, Memphis spent almost 40 years building the downtown cobblestone landing, and then a century or so neglecting it.
“Now we’re playing catch-up,” said Weaver, principal and senior archeologist with a firm that has conducted archeological digs and historical studies of the landmark on the Memphis riverfront.

In an effort to restore the 2,000-foot-long landing that extends from Confederate Park to the foot of Beale Street, the city’s Riverfront Development Corp. has proposed a $6.86 million project featuring walkways, repairs to the surface, a stabilization wall and a base of stone revetment, or riprap.

But the proposal — the subject of a public comment period that ended last week — has generated a debate almost as rough and rocky as the landing itself.
